Background
The first fluid power course at Politecnico di Torino was launched in 1979 and taught by Prof. Luca G. Zarotti. The course, titled Oleodinamica e Pneumatica (Fluid Power and Pneumatics, 120 hours), was offered in the final year of the five-year Laurea degree in Mechanical Engineering until 2004. The program covered the main aspects of fluid power components and systems, including flow generation units, pressure and flow control valves, actuator groups, hydrostatic transmissions, load-sensing systems, hydrostatic steering, proportional valves and servovalves. Some pages in Italian from the curriculum of that time can be downloaded here (896.42 kB). The course syllabus for the 1989–1990 academic year can be found here
(328.52 kB).
With the introduction of the new university system in 2003 (the 3+2 system introduced with the Bologna Process), the course was split into two new 60-hour courses: Oleodinamica and Sistemi Oleodinamici. The first was a compulsory subject taught in the third year of the first-level degree program in Torino and Mondovì (CN) until 2012, while the second was offered in the Master's degree program in Torino from 2005 to 2011. Both courses were later replaced by the English-taught courses Fluid Power I (renamed Mobile and Industrial Fluid Power starting in 2024 and still active) and Fluid Power II (offered until 2013), which were elective courses in the Master's program.
At the Second School of Engineering in Vercelli, Oleodinamica e Pneumatica was taught from 1995 to 2003. It was then replaced by the 60-hour course Componenti e Sistemi Oleodinamici (Fluid Power Components and Systems), taught in the second year of the Master's program until 2010.
Since 2004, the course Sistemi Oleodinamici per l'Autoveicolo (Fluid Power Systems for Motor Vehicles, renamed Automotive Fluid Power Systems in 2011) has been offered as a 60-hour elective course in the Master's degree program in Automotive Engineering. From 2009 onward, this course has been taught in English.
Between 1981 and 2011, all courses were taught by Prof. Nicola Nervegna, with the exception of the Vercelli course starting around 2000, which was taught by Prof. Luca Gilardino and later by Prof. Massimo Rundo. Since 2012, all courses have been taught by Prof. Massimo Rundo.
