Courses
Background
The first course in fluid power at Politecnico di Torino began in 1979. The course, Oleodinamica e Pneumatica (Fluid Power and Pneumatics, 120 hours), was offered in the final year of the 5-year Laurea degree in Mechanical Engineering until 2004. It covered the main aspects of fluid power components and systems, including flow generation units, pressure and flow valves, end-user units, hydrostatic transmissions, load-sensing systems, hydrostatic steering systems, proportional valves, and servovalves.
With the introduction of the new university system in 2003, the course was split into two new 5-credit courses: Oleodinamica (Fluid Power) and Sistemi Oleodinamici (Fluid Power Systems). The first was a compulsory subject taught in the 3rd year of the first-level degree in Torino and Mondovì until 2012, while the second was offered during the second-level degree in Torino from 2005 to 2011. Both courses have since been replaced by Fluid Power I (Mobile and Industrial Fluid Power starting in 2024) and Fluid Power II (6 credits, in English, until 2013), offered as elective courses in the M.Sc. program.
At the II School of Engineering in Vercelli, Oleodinamica e Pneumatica was held from 1995 to 2003. It was then replaced by the 5-credit course Componenti e Sistemi Oleodinamici (Fluid Power Components and Systems), taught in the 2nd year of the M.Sc. program until 2010.
Since 2004, the course Sistemi Oleodinamici per l'Autoveicolo (Fluid Power Systems for Motor Vehicles, renamed Automotive Fluid Power Systems in 2011) has been an elective 6-credit course in the M.Sc. program in Automotive Engineering. From 2009 onward, this course has been taught in English.
